Our tablescape was styled drawing inspiration from this Technicolor Cinco de Mayo Wedding featured on Ruffled, combined with our lively selection of Mexican Party Decorations.
My favorite part of the process?  Arranging the flowers!  I hand picked these bouquets from the local florist shops: hot pink and orange gerbera daisies, fuchsia and navy anemones, sorbet and rose quartz ranunculus, peach and yellow pincushion protea, a sunflower and a few stems of viking poms.

After all the excitement, I’m raring to throw my own party!  So this poses the question: Margaritas or Mojitos?  The obvious answer… BOTH!

We followed these Pomegranate Margarita and Mojitos Recipes from the pros at The FoodNetwork:

Pomegranate Margarita ~
Lime wedge, plus more for garnish
4 ounces white tequila
2 ounces Triple Sec
1/2 cup pomegranate juice
1 lime, juiced (optional)
Club soda

Pour salt onto a plate or shallow dish. With a lime wedge rub along the rim of a glass and dip glasses upside down to salt the rim. Fill glasses with ice. In a cocktail shaker with ice place the tequila, triple sec, pomegranate juice, and lime juice. Pour into the salt-rimmed glasses and top off with club soda. Garnish with a lime wedge, if desired.

Mojitos Pitcher ~
1 bunch fresh mint, cleaned
1 cup sugar
4 lemons, juiced
4 limes, juiced
Ice cubes
1 (750 ml bottle) light rum
1 liter club soda

In a large pitcher, muddle mint sprigs with sugar and lemon and lime juices until well combined. Add ice, rum and club soda and stir together. Pour into glasses, straining out mint. Enjoy!

Kentucky Derby Party Ideas

With the sounds of bluegrass and birds filling the sweet spring air, tis the season to get back in the saddle of another Run for the Roses. The first Kentucky Derby took place in 1875 and has tradition in American society as the longest-running sporting event.  We love any opportunity to celebrate, so we put together some elegant party ideas for celebrating Derby Day in style.

The Kentucky Derby is so much more than a two-minute horse race, and you don’t have to be Churchill Downs to get in on the action.  With such rich tradition, fashion, and good ole’ sportsmanship, Derby Day is a charming reason to throw a southern soiree including fashionable getups {hello, fun spring hats!}, some friendly competition, and dash of your own traditions.

Roses are the traditional Derby flower, communicating the timeless elegance of this event.  We decided on Red Roses & Pink Lilies* in silver plated Mint Julep Cup Vases, Milk Glass Vases, and an additional pair of Red Roses in one of our favorite Apothecary Jars.  This selection of elegant party decorations also looks amazing intermixed with antique silver objects, like the vintage heirloom Horse Show dishes featured in our vignettes.
You can choose any colors for your Derby Day party, but we wanted to keep it Kentucky traditional, so we are using white, silver, red and green with a splash of Pink Lilies*.  Take this look to the next level by incorporating Black & White Polka Dot and Kelly Green Pom Poms as ceiling decor.
*It is important to note that the Pink Stargazer Lilies featured in this post are extremely poisonous to cats {as are all members of the Liliaceae Family).  If you have some feline friends in your home and want to add a little pink to your party decor, we recommend steering clear of Lilies, unless they are of the Alstroemeria family, such as the Brazilian Lily and the Peruvian Lily.  Check out this thread on Apartment Therapy for more information about Kitty-Friendly Flowers.

To add some fashionable fun, host a craft night a week before your Derby Party {this weekend!} to DIY your own fabulous derby hats.  We found some affordable floppy sun hats at Forever 21 that would make the perfect canvas to get wild & fancy with ribbons, feathers, brooches, and flowers.  The day of your Party, provide flowers so your guests can freshen their bonnets and look their best!

Outdoor day games are a great addition to any party. It breaks up the mingling, adds some friendly competition, and allows for interaction with guests that may not know each other that well. To add to your Derby Day party theme make {or source} 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place ribbons for the the winners of Horse Shoes, Corn Hole, Crochet, Frisbee, and Bacchae ball.
You can also place bets on the 20 horses racing at the Derby online, displaying the names of the top contending horses on decorative chalk boards on easels nearby.

As you search for Derby Day party ideas you’ll find that the Mint Julep has been the traditional beverage of the Kentucky Derby for nearly a century. Though we’re all for bourbon and mint, we also like to accommodate palates that prefer bubbles.  To serve a sparkling mint cocktail, review our recipe below, then visit Epicurious for a Classic Kentucky Derby Mint Julep review & recipe.

Eco Friendly Party Products: Bamboo Plates, Wooden Spoons, Paper Straws & More!

With earth day upon us I find myself reflecting on my eco footprint.
I wonder if I managed to shrink my footprint on this planet over the past year.
In my home we use cloth rags in the place of paper towels, we recycle, and we also compost. I am proud to have made my daily life a greener experience to start to make a difference every day, including Earth Day!

This Spring I am faced with a new challenge, as I am getting ready to throw a sizable party: a pot-luck gathering to celebrate the house I just bought!  Everyone will bring a dish to share, and I, the hostess, will be supplying the dish ware.  I think back on all those times when I might have broken my own eco rules to use paper or plastic disposable plates and cringe.

USA made Paper Straws
Our colorful selection of USA made, retro-styled, 100% biodegradable Paper Straws look fab in our Recycled Glass Bottles & Vases.  Styled by Kate Milliken, Photography by Maia Bissette.

Lucky for me, I work for Luna Bazaar, sister company of Cultural Intrigue, where we strive to keep our impact on the environment to a minimum.  Our awareness of environmental issues largely influences our product designs and business decisions.  This is why we don’t sell Sky Lanterns.  We are committed to using sustainably harvested and renewable resources whenever possible such as bamboo, rice paper, and recycled materials.  In our shipping department, more than 80% of our packing materials are reused or recycled.

In recent years we’ve launched new lines of eco friendly products for wedding, party and home, including Recycled Glass Vases, Candle Holders and Napkin Rings, U.S.A. made Compostable Paper Straws, and our newest addition: Compostable Wooden Picnic Ware, providing elegant disposable dinnerware  alternative that includes Biodegradable Palm Leaf and Bamboo Plates with an accompanied selection of Compostable Wooden Utensils.

Compostable Wooden Dinnerware, available at Luna Bazaar.

With our new eco friendly dinnerware in mind, I see this as a wonderful opportunity to make one more step towards a “greener lifestyle”.  The days of chemically dyed party plates, and plastic utensils is over.  Our unique, eco friendly party supplies offer a staple alternative for every environmentally conscious host and hostess out there.

Another cool thing about Luna Bazaar’s Decor: You can color match Paper Lanterns, Tissue Paper Pom Poms, Fabric and Paper Parasols and Hand Fans with our eco friendly Paper Straws to beautifully tie your whole event together!

Vintage Style Easter Decorating Ideas!

When I was a kid, my parents went to great lengths to make Easter one of the most special holidays. They set up an egg hunt to lead us to our hidden Easter baskets. We would run around with glowing excitement, looking for the ‘golden egg’, aka the Easter egg that held twenty dollars.

Easter Basket with Vintage Indent Ornaments & matching ranunculus in our Gold Mercury Glass Vase.

As the youngest, my brother and sister would always help me spot the more obvious eggs, but it was only later in life I was able to acquire this ‘golden egg’ before my older siblings.

Even today, as I’m about enter my 25th year and my brother, his 30th, this special spring tradition continues.  Of course, it’s more of a silly tradition but I’m very fond of the time that we get to spend as a family laughing about the infamous golden egg.  My desire to further our traditions and these memories inspired me to host a Welcome Spring/Easter Brunch for my family and friends.

Easter boasts a variety of pastel flowers and whimsical décor.  I’m seeking to create a special celebration that combines those whimsical pastels with unique vintage décor for my DIY Celebration.

I envision an apothecary jar candy bar, filled with an assortment of jelly beans, macaroons, and colored eggs. Assorted cake stands at different heights with chocolate rabbits from my local chocolatier, and delicious snacks. I also envision a mimosa bar with delightful pink paper straws to give the glasses some sparkle.

As for my plans for table décor: I’m dreaming of assorted milk glass vases filled with my favorite pink peonies on a burlap table runner, eyelet paper lanterns, and hanging paper pom poms to give the space some depth. I love utilizing paper lanterns for all kinds of décor ideas but especially at parties. The soft lighting creates the perfect ambiance for any gathering, and the best part about it is you can reutilize the paper lanterns in your home for fresh DIY decorating.

At all of my parties I set up a camera on a tripod and hang a 20’ by 20’ gold frame for festive photo ops! This is one of my favorite party decorating ideas as you can customize your party theme by the supplies you use! For my Easter brunch I’m utilizing two gorgeous pink pastel lace parasols — my niece and best friend will love these!  I’m also planning on making a fresh rose garland with fishing line as apart of the photo backdrop! As a party favor I’m filling up twenty favor bags with jelly belly beans. Yum!

Party Supplies – Decorate. Celebrate.

You can buy a colorful tablecloth with matching paper plates, bake a cake and decorate it with icing flowers, stock up on party hats and noisemakers, and still not capture the excitement you want for your party. You need paper lanterns! When it comes to party supplies, paper lanterns are the key to instantly creating a party atmosphere. Professional party planners learned this a long time ago.

If you are planning a children’s party, paper lanterns couldn’t be simpler to set up. Most children’s parties take place in the afternoon, so your paper lanterns don’t even need lights! Simply choose your lanterns and thread a string through the loops at the top of the lantern. Tack the string to the ceiling. The bigger the paper lanterns, the more tacks you will need in order to support the weight of them. This is not to say that they are very heavy, just that larger lanterns pull down a bit more than smaller ones.  Note: Fishing line can be used instead of string for suspending the lanterns.

One pressing question you may have while looking for party supplies and specifically paper lanterns is “How many?”

Don’t worry, you won’t have to buy THIS many!
Photo: The Star Newspaper, Malaysia

It helps to know the dimensions of the room that will be used for
the party. If you can draw the room to scale on a piece of graph paper,
you can figure out the number of lanterns you need. See these
instructions in the FAQ section of our website:

How can I figure out the number of paper lanterns needed for a large tent or room?

As an alternative to party lanterns, try festive paper garlands. They are even easier to set up than paper lanterns!

Strands of Paper Garlands are an inexpensive but effective solution to
decorating a room for a birthday party.

Paper Garlands are the classic decoration for a child’s birthday party. A mix of bright colors is favored, as in the paper garland photo above. Whether you choose paper lanterns or paper garlands, either way you are set to throw a fun party!
